Discover the health secrets of Millets: A hidden gem in healthy eating.

The concept of 'superfood' is a recent addition to our culinary lexicon. It aptly describes nutrient-rich food with low-calorie counts and reflects their exceptional nutritional profile. Since 2013  (International Year of Quinoa), there has been an increase in the popularity of superfoods worldwide; India is leading the world towards superfoods.

India declared the year 2018 as the National Year of Millets to promote millets for nutrition security. The same year, they rebranded millets as nutri-cereals due to their high nutritional values. The United Nations (UN), along with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM2023) at the request of the Indian government to raise awareness of millet's nutritional and health benefits.

Now the question arises: what is so special about these millets that the Indian government, as well as the whole world, is giving them so much importance?

So, let us dive into the overview of millets........

'MILLETS' is a term collectively used for several small-seeded annual grasses cultivated as grain crops. These are some of the oldest cultivated grains in the world, of which India is its largest producer. The consumption of millet in India is mentioned in the oldest YAJURVEDA texts. These ancient grains are very important due to their nutritional, ecological, and economic benefits.

Types of Millets:

There are more than 20 different varieties of millet. Some of the commonly used varieties are:

  • Sorghum millet (Jowar).
  • Pearl millet (Bajra)
  • Proso millet (Chena)
  • Foxtail millet (Kangni)
  • Finger millet (Ragi)
  • Barnyard millet (Bhagar)
  • Little millet
  • Kodo millet
  • And many more.

Jacqueline Hughes (Director General of the International Crops Research Institute of Semi-Arid Tropics) stated that millets are gluten-free, low glycemic index, and have a range of nutritional benefits. The National Institute of Nutrition in India and other partners have found that regular consumption of millet has various health benefits.

Health Benefits of Millets:

Helps you in managing your blood sugar levels:

Millets have a low glycemic index, and consuming them regularly can lower the risk of developing diabetes.

Helps you to manage your weight:

Due to their low-calorie counts, millets are an ideal food of choice for weight loss. They help you avoid unnecessary snacking and overeating. Millets keep you fuller for longer compared to other carbohydrates as they take more time to digest and absorb in your body.

Millets are a rich source of fiber, promoting healthy digestion and alleviating symptoms like bloating, constipation, and other digestive disorders. They also contain prebiotics, fostering beneficial gut bacteria and boosting defenses against gastric and colon cancer, and kidney and liver issues

Helps us maintain a healthy cardiovascular system:

Millets are a rich source of essential fats, which provide our bodies with healthy fats that support weight management by reducing excess fat storage. This eventually lowers the risk of high cholesterol, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. Millets also contain potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure, promote optimal circulation, and maintain overall heart health.

 Acts as a natural detoxifier:

Millets are rich in antioxidants that help eliminate toxins from our bodies. Antioxidants support our body's natural detox process by combating free radicals and thus promoting overall health.

Apart from these 5 health benefits, there are many other benefits of millets. Also, each millet has its own use, there individual benefits.

In conclusion, millets are more than just an ancient grain- they are a scientifically supported powerhouse for modern wellness. By integrating these grains into our daily meals, you nurture not only your physical body but also your inner balance.

Your journey towards deeper wellness begins with your choice of food, the meal you prepare, and the awareness you bring to your plate. Millets, with their grounding and nourishing nature, can be a simple yet transformative step in that direction.
