SPEARMINT.
Scientific name : Mentha spicata.
Synonyms: Garden mint, common mint, mint (species of mint), pudina, etc.
Geographical sources :
It is indigenous to Europe but is extensively cultivated in North America and Asia. It grows better in a cool and shady place than in full exposure to the sun.
Characters :
Spearmint is a herb.
- Colour: 1. Leaves- Green to dark green.
2. Stem- Purple.
- Odor: Aromatic.
- Taste: Aromatic (but not followed by cooling sensation as in peppermint).
Spearmint oil :
It is obtained by steam distillation of the herb and is yellowish in color and having the characteristic aromatic taste of mint.
Spearmint oil has:-
Specific gravity = 0.930 - 0.940
Optical rotation = 48° - 59°
Refractive index = 1.4820 - 1.4900
Uses of Spearmint :
Its leaves and oil are used to make medicine. It is useful in both medicinal as well as cosmetic aspects. It is high in antioxidants. It is also used in foods.

It is used as a carminative, flavor, and source of spearmint oil. The oil essence of spearmint is used mainly for flavoring mouth-washes, kinds of toothpaste, chewing gums, etc. Its also used in sauces, beverages, balm, ointments, inhalers, etc. It is a coolant(having a soothing effect) that is used to pacify inflammation, burns, and wounds. Spearmint is also used in various skin care products.

Side-effects :
Higher consumption of spearmint increases liver damage and worsens kidney disorders.
Greater consumption of spearmint by pregnant women may lead to miscarriage. In breastfeeding women, higher quantities of spearmint should be avoided.
