TULSI - THE QUEEN OF HERBS.
Scientific name: Ocimum tenuiflorum (also Ocimum sanctum).
Synonyms: Scared basil, holy basil.

Tulsi is a herbaceous, branched annual plant found all over India. It is considered sacred by HINDUS. It is commonly cultivated in gardens and near temples. It is propagated by seeds and is nowadays commercially cultivated for its volatile oil.
Tulsi is one of the roughly 60 species of the genus Ocimum. Tulsi is a small herb approximately 30 to 75 cm in height. It is a medicinal plant. All its parts are of medicinal importance but the most important are leaves (fresh and dried). There are 4 types of tulsi (in ayurvedic texts).
1. Rama Tulsi, Sri, or Lakshmi Tulsi (green leaves).
2. Krishna or Shyama Tulsi (purple leaves).
3. Vana Tulsi (wild type).

4. Kapoor Tulsi (heavy flowered).
Chemical Constituents :
Eugenol = 70%
Carvacrol = 3%
Eugenol-methyl-ether = 20%
Caryophyllin
Also contains alkaloids, glycosides, saponin, tannins, vitamin C (in appreciable amount); traces of maleic acid, citric acid, and tartaric acid.
Uses :
Tulsi oil: Antibacterial and insecticidal.
Tulsi leaves: Used as a stimulant, aromatic, anticatarrhal, spasmolytic, and diaphoretic.
Tulsi juice: Used as antiperiodic, as a constituent of several skincare products, and can cure earache.
Smoking anything is not good for health but smoking tulsi leaves (dried) can be useful to quit tobacco smoking.
NOTE: TULSI LEAVES CONTAIN A HIGH AMOUNT OF MERCURY AND IRON (RELEASED ON CHEWING) WHICH CAN DAMAGE YOUR TEETH AND CAUSE DISCOLORATION. HENCE IT IS ADVISED TO AVOID CHEWING RAW TULSI LEAVES.
